Friday, March 26th, from 11:30am - 1:30pm, the Entrepreneurship Club will be sponsoring our first Cameron Cookout. This will be a fundraiser for Relay for Life and will be lots of fun!

The best part about it is one lucky professor will get a PIE to the face.

We will have a table set up in Cameron Hall the week of March 16-19, and the 22&25....at the table we will be collecting money in jars with your favorite(or least favorite) professor's picture on it and the jar with the most money at the end of the week will get a PIE in the face at 1:00pm at the cookout!!!!

We will have shirts for sale also at the table and will have some
FREE SHIRTS to give away during the cookout!!!

Meal (Hamburger OR 2 hot dogs--- with chips and a drink) tickets will be $4 and are sold at our table in Cameron or at the cookout the day of! If you don't want to eat and just want to have fun, we will have a donation jar set up for Relay for Life.

100% of our proceeds will go to Relay for Life! so come out, have a good time, eat some good food, and Pie a professor all while raising money for a good cause!!

Etiquette Dinner

The Cameron School of Business hosts an annual etiquette dinner. This year the dinner will be on November 17th.

This is an event where students get a great meal and also get to learn proper rules of etiquette for how to eat in a formal setting. The dinner will be held in the Madeline Suite on campus.

Tickets are just $10, please contact Justin Longino if you are interested in attending. It is a very informative and fun event.

Our last two meetings of the year will take place in November on the 11th and 18th. Both will be in Cameron Hall, room 210 at 5:00pm.

Nov. 11th - We will have a panel of college entrepreneurs who will share stories about how they have balanced school and work.

Nov. 18th - This will be our last meeting of the year! We will have the t-shirts at this meeting if not before! We will also be announcing the winner of the umbrella sale and we will be having a small raffle for those members in attendance.
At this meeting the new officers for next year will be decided. We will have two positions open. Contact Dr. Harper with a brief bio of yourself stating why you would like to be an officer and what your qualifications are.

Our next October meeting will be on the 27th.

At this meeting we will be having rocket pitches from several of our members. After they give their pitches, we would like the other members to ask them questions and critique both their pitch and idea.

It will be a great learning experience for both the 'pitchers' and the 'catchers.'

We will also be discussing t-shirts, our umbrella fundraiser, and topics for the last two meetings of the year!

As always, our pizza reception will follow for members.

Who hasn't gone into class on a bright and sunny day only to realize when you leave class that it is pouring down rain and you left your umbrella at home! I think almost all of us have experienced some form of this. Even if you were smart enough to take your umbrella with you, how many people have you seen soggily walking through the rain and puddles along the Chancellors Walk?
The Entrepreneurship Club is starting a brand new fundraiser this semester. Aimed at helping out our fellow students who's day isn't going so well because of those wonderful Wilmington downpours.

We will be selling umbrellas for $3 each throughout the semester. If you are a club member, please see a club officer to obtain umbrellas to sell. Each club members is encouraged to take as many as they think they can sell. (We will be discussing this event more in-depth at our Oct. 14 meeting.)

If you are not a club member and you would like to purchase an umbrella, look for any of our members (who will have "authorized seller" buttons) and ask them to please help you stay dry!

Half of the money will go towards the clubs Relay for Life team that will be organized in the spring semester. The other half will go back into the Club so that we can offer our members many more events, activities, and benefits.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 in Cameron Hall room 210. Our guest speaker will be Evan Folds, owner of Progressive Gardens.

Evan is a graduate of UNCW and below is a profile of his company:
"PG was born in November of 2002 with the idea that there are more healthy and efficient ways to garden and produce food, and more responsible ways for humans to interact with the Earth. We strive to be a resource for anyone interested in broadening their perspective regarding the human role in Earth and incorporating sustainable practices into their everyday lives. By encouraging efficient and conscientious gardening, organic principles - from lawn and pond care to pest, waste, and water management to bathouses - and promoting efficient overall human/earth interactions we hope to help ease the burden the Earth feels from our endeavors and, in so doing, foster the undoubted therapeutical relationships between progress, perspective, and recognition."

Be there just before 5:00pm to hear Evan's talk. We'll also be covering a little bit of club business beforehand and then we will have our pizza reception following all of those events. It's not too late to join to come out if you're interested and bring a friend!

The regularly scheduled meeting planed for March 4th has been cancelled.

To replace this meeting, two separate events will be held.

March 24th - Bob Rippy - Owner of Jungle Rapids, "The Dark Side of Entrepreurship" at 4:00pm in CIS 1008.

A reception will follow Mr. Rippy's presentation from 5:00-5:30pm in CIS room 2008 including pizza for club members.

March 25th - Chad Paul - Managing Partner at Harbor Island Partners, LLC, "The Art and Science of the Deal" at 4:00pm in CIS 1008.

After Mr. Paul's session will be the first annual EntrepreneurFest at 6:00pm in the Madeline Suite. Please see the corresponding post for more details. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend.

The first annual "EntrepreneurFest" will be held this year on March 25th at 6:00-8:00pm in the Madeline Suite.

This event will be a dinner for both members of the Entrepreneurship Club and non-members who what to see what the E-Club is all about.

Guests will include: past club speakers, past guests of the Entrepreneurs Roundtable, members of the Entrepreneurship Advisory Board, and entrepreneurship faculty.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance through any E-Club officer or Valentina Babanskyj, the Management Department secretary. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. This includes an italian buffet dinner with dessert. The DEADLINE to register is March 18th. Dress is business attire.

Kristen is the co-founder with Meredith Sullivan of Coastal Cupcakes. Both are graduates of the Cameron School of Business. Her presentation will be “The Entrepreneurial Journey of Coastal Cupcakes.” She will address the challenges of starting her retail business as a young entrepreneur.

"Entrepreneurship in a global environment"

On Wednesday, November 5th, our Eclub meeting featured Mr. Rob Cox Jr. as the guest speaker.

Mr. Rob Cox Jr. has been working in the global textile industry for over 20 years. He started as an importer for a textile company before branching out and starting his own importing business. He has dealt with everything from the decentralization of the textile industry to launching an online textile trading platform during the mid-nineties. All of this while working in a constantly changing global environment. Mr. Cox currently still owns his textile import business and is still heavily involved in the overseas markets. He also currently owns a restaurant in Wilmington.

The meeting was held at 5pm in CH 210 and was restricted to Eclub members.

Financial Modeling: “Unlocking the secrets of the black box”

On five Tuesdays in October and November, 2008, the seminar Financial Modeling: Unlocking the secrets of the black box was held in in room 1003 of the Computer Information Systems Building. Chad Paul was the seminar leader.

This seminar is back by popular demand. The seminar was presented to a “standing room only” group of students a few years ago. Chad Paul, who developed and led the seminar, volunteered to teach the seminar again. The five-module seminar provided insights into the process of modeling a firm’s financial situation that can serve as the basis for improving business planning, decision making, and performance.

The seminar was sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Club, The Financial Management Club, and The National Association of Business and Economics (Economics Club).

Seminar Logistics: Eligibility, Registration, and Prerequisite Coursework

The seminar was free to students in the Cameron School of Business but space was limited to 45 students. Enrollment was initially open to members of the three sponsoring clubs and the remaining spaces were available on a first-registered, first-enrolled basis. The seminar was open to students who have completed ACG 203 and Fin 335 and was taught in room 1003 of the Computer Information Systems Building.

Profile of Seminar Leader

Chad Paul is a Managing Partner of Harbor Island Partners, LLC, a private equity investment firm headquartered in Wilmington, NC, with an affiliate office located in Indianapolis. Prior to the formation of Harbor Island Partners, LLC in 2000, Mr. Paul was a Managing Partner of Arnolt Partners, LLC, an affiliated partnership of Harbor Island Partners, LLC. Prior to Mr. Paul’s tenure at Arnolt Partners, LLC, he spent a decade working in investment banking specializing in the distressed securities area. Mr. Paul spent his investment banking tenure working in both Manhattan, NY, and Los Angeles, CA, and was previously employed by Merrill Lynch & Co., Colony Capital and Salomon Brothers, Inc. Mr. Paul holds a B.A. degree in economics from Holy Cross and a Masters from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.

On Wednesday, October 1st, our Eclub meeting had as guest speakers three UNCW student entrepreneurs.

They shared their experiences and wisdom. The meeting was held at 5 pm in CH 210. Prof. Harper served as the moderator. Our guests speakers were:

Chris Kluesener, a senior EBD major, owner of two businesses: Thrust Surf Camp, a surf camp with operations in Central Long Island, NY and Wrightsville Beach, NC; and Thrust Clothing, a clothing company based out of West Gilgo Beach, New York;
Geoff Hamrick, CEO of North Carolina Coupons, a provider of cupoms and savings based on the Raleigh-Durham area; and
Andy Wittman, CEO of Recycle Your Homework, an online company that enable students quickly and easily solve homework questions.

Tips for young entrepreneurs

Check out below five tips that two of our college entrepreneurs gave to our members.

Chris Kluesener:

Look before you jump! Make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into before you commit. Do you know the industry? Do you have any experience? Have you done any market research? Don’t form a corporation, open bank accounts, or take investor money until you do.
Don’t try to be Everything for Everyone. Decide what your business is and stick to it. Be the best at what you do. Instead of doing 10 mediocre jobs, do 1 great job.
Wait until you NEED to incorporate. It’s a big expense and commitment that you probably don’t need right away. Wait until it’s totally necessary for business or liability reasons. You won’t make sales just because you’re incorporated.
Be Committed. Passion and dedication are crucial to any startup. Make sure you’ll still love your business idea in the future.
Have Fun and Don’t take yourself too seriously. Don’t think you’re the smartest one in the room, cause you probably aren’t. Don’t be afraid to laugh at your mistakes. If you aren’t having a good time, what’s the point?

Andy Wittman:

Don’t be average.
Keep a regular schedule – don’t leave out fun time.
Build connections, don’t burn bridges.
Invest in your own business - don’t form an Italian sports car habit.
Remember your purpose in starting a business.

Movie: "Startup.com"

On Monday, September 22nd, "Startup.com" was shown by Dr. Harper from 6:00-9:00 in room 110 in Cameron Hall. Some Eclub members watched the movie, primarily aimed to his EBD 480 students.

The video produced by MTV profiled the startup of an internet-based company during the initial days of the internet craziness. The video captures many of the challenges associated with starting an internet business. As Rotten Tomatoes states, "Startup.com is more than just a look at the rise and fall of the new economy. At its center is a friendship being tested to the limit, and that's what makes it worth viewing."

The Eclub’s first meeting of the year was held at 5:00 on Wednesday, September 3^rd, 2008 in room 210 of Cameron Hall. Brian Eckel was the guest speaker. Brian is the co-founder of Cape Fear Commercial Real Estate. After graduated from the University of South Carolina, Brian had years of experience with several different firms in the real estate industry, including being the VP of a company which represented Fortune 500 companies as well as emerging technology organizations. He spoke to our members for one hour on “The Challenges of starting a business as a young entrepreneur.”

Fall 2008 Involvement Carnival

Our club was present at the Fall 2008 Involvement Carnival, held on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Campus Commons (around the clock tower). The fair enabled students to be informed about UNCW organizations and departments, local businesses, religious organizations, and community service agencies.

Many students stopped by the Eclub table to check what the Eclub has to offer this Fall.

Any undergraduate and graduate majors from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington can join the Eclub, regardless of major.

Application

Students join the organization by submiting the completed application (download here) and paying an annual membership fee of US$ 25.00, related to the August 2008-May 2009 membership period. Spring semester only membership is $15.00. The payments can be cash or check made out to the UNCW Entrepreneurship Club. Payments should be given to Prof. Harper (harpers@uncw.edu) in Cameron Hall, room 200-5 in the Department of Management or our CHRO, Kevin Scott. To accomplish this mission, we hold and engage in meetings with entrepreneurs, rocket-pitch competitions and social networking events.
Founded in 2006, with the launch of the Entrepreneurship and Business Development major, our student organization is supported by the Cameron School of Business at The University of North Carolina Wilmington.
If you have any issues or complaints related to our business school, please let us know (eclub@uncw.edu) so we might be helpful to solve it. Our club has a seat in the Cameron School of Business' Student Advisory Council, a forum to connect business student organizations with the school, where we can bring those issues directly to the Cameron's Chair.
